Getting To Trieste, And Getting Around

The airport at Ronchi dei Legionari has its own railway station joined to the terminal by a covered walkway of roughly 400 metres, so the train is the obvious way in rather than a taxi. In the city one Trieste Trasporti ticket covers the buses and the Opicina tram: EUR 1.50 for sixty minutes, EUR 1.85 for seventy-five, EUR 3.35 for the day, and on Sundays and public holidays a single runs for four hours. Contactless cards and phones can be tapped on board and the system charges the cheapest fare that applies. The tram to Opicina is running again, it leaves from piazza Dalmazia, and almost every other guide still says otherwise.

A gust is an instant, not an average, and it is the number that decides whether the Rive is pleasant or unusable. The bora arrives from the east-north-east, off the Carso, and it can lift from calm to over 70 km/h inside an hour, which is why the direction column matters as much as the speed. Readings from this station describe the waterfront and nothing else: pressure here is measured at the quay, not corrected to sea level, so it cannot be compared with a hill station a few kilometres inland. The sea figure comes from the nearest open-water grid cell, 7.3 km up the gulf from the molo, which is the closest point that model publishes.

The record gust at the molo reaches at least 110 km/h in every month of the year, and the lowest of the twelve monthly records belongs to June. The peak of the whole series is 168.1 km/h, set in February 2012. Most coasts get their wind in one season. This one gets it in all twelve.
